As a tribute to Charles James, a British-born fashion designer known as "America's First Couturier", the 2014 Costume Institute Gala was themed Charles James: Beyond Fashion, with White Ties & Decorations as the dress code. The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York since 1971.
