Maki Oh's Fall 2016 Collection

Hello lovelies,

Happy Easter from your one and only Ebonii Edewor. Unto other news, it's the Fall 2016 collection from Maki Oh, 'Ehn'.

Maki Oh's Fall 2016 collection is a foray into the Nigerian word 'ehn'. A simple expression that carries a multitude of meanings depending on intonation, 'ehn' contains several dimensions that are not immediately obvious in its three letters. The complexity of this word is mirrored in the complexity of being queens and 'magic', when a black woman wakes up in the morning and draws breath, what immediately ensues is the daily fight against the external push to limit her dimensions. Maki Oh created the Fall 2016 Collection with this resistance in mind, culminating in a celebratory acceptance of this existence, with all its denied but intrinsic beauty and nuance- "We are here, and this is who we are, ehn!"

The collection uses markers such as silk chiffon, pearls and ribbons to move through the assimilative performance of hyper-feminity that is required of black women,  accentuated with frills and ruffles. The shapes take direct inspiration from traditional Nigerian womenswear, particularly the different voluminous blouses worn with wrappers. Black female resistance is represented in appliqued camouflage that contrast with the light feminity of performance. Varying representations of eyes are repeated heavily throughout the collection, including a traditional Yoruba adiré print of 'inner eyes' that represents self-reflection and realisation. The eyes are also observing, an indication of "we see you" as well as the inward "we see ourselves".

The colour palette draws from the richness of Nigerian landscape- from the lush greens, to the earth tones of Nok terracotta, punctuated by bursts of pastels. Handmade bags were created in collaboration with Zashadu, using locally sourced leathers. The hand-painted and hand-dyed indigo adiré motifs this season echo themes of knowing and sight. Adiré motifs may be mistaken as being indistinguishable and repetitive but it is this limited perception belying a deeper complexity that is the thread running through the collection,  from the nuanced definitions of the word 'ehn' to the truth of bkack womanhood.

Komole Kandids Series 1 and 2

Hello lovelies,

From the House of Deola, formerly known as Deola Sagoe, say hello to Komole Kandids Series 1

The latest collection in the Komole range, for the House of Deola, presents an assemblage of designs for bridal wear drawing upon the mood and romance evoked by royalty and royal weddings through the ages.

Over 12 years of research and development are ingrained into the Komole range (the original collection was launched in 2012), the result of which is a profoundly refreshing take on Aso-Oke and the look of the modern bride.

Deola Ade Ojo of #KomoleKandids: “There is no need anymore to have Aso-Oke and a Lace outfit as two answers to an occasion’s fashion demands… we have combined both into one and by so doing transcended, making the new creation even better than the sum of it’s parts. The new fabric motifs and the fashions that we have formed them into elevate the wearer to princess level, while still keeping her culturally grounded – I believe that this is what true class and elegance is about, shining in the form of a glow rather than a tinselly shine”

The colour palette is a continuum from pastels to jewel tones, with iridescent sheen arising from silk ‘shot-through’ Aso-Oke weaves. Silhouettes flatter into a demure hourglass shape with floor length dresses that stagger the onlooker.

As Easter’s end beckons and the accompanying wedding season begins, the House of Deola promises a second series of Komole Kandids to be launched on the 6th of March.

And now for Komole Kandids Series 2

Series-2 is to Series-1 what the wedding reception is to the wedding ceremony - if Series-1 appealed to the demure ‘classic-ness’ in the bride and bridal party, then Series-2 says ‘it’s time to get the party started’; this is the moment for the wedding guest (dare we say even the uninvited ones), to have their limelight moment!
